In past centuries, tattooing was performed extensively throughout Oceania. Almost on every island existed a different tattooing culture. On New Zealand, Samoa and the Marquesas the tattooing was the most advanced with tattooist using a wide variety of instruments. Here the entire body, including the eyelids could be covered, mainly with geometric patterns, such as crescents, circles and squares. On the smaller islands popular tattoo designs were depictions of fish but especially of the frigate bird and the hornbill. On most islands in the Pacific the number of tattoos indicated a person's status and only the wealthy could afford a full-body tattoo. Men were tattooed as a mark of honour or to put fear into their enemies. The most notorious were the Maori warriors who had their entire face engraved with spirals. As a result a tattooed head became the ultimate spoil of battle, physical proof of the power and success of the victor, and thus a status symbol.
